First take off doors and covers before anything else like stripping wires or taking out a motor. As you break the machine down, began sorting your metals, this will save time, and most likely keep your higher priced metals separate from the others.
Ultimately, make sure the appliance is not plugged in, and you have the proper tools for the job. Some common scrap metal items include: Insulated Copper Wire. Copper Scrap. Sheet Aluminum. Aluminum Siding. Can you scrap a TV? Parts of the scrap TV that you can not sell can be disposed of in your normal trash. Therefore, if you are wondering what to do with old TV sets, if they are older models, you should scrap them.
Additionally, nearly all of the wires within the TV are copper, so be sure to save them as well. Can you buy stuff from scrap yards? It's a stock market for scrap metal. As scrap metal prices fluctuate on a daily basis, scrap yards buy low and sell high.
So the scrap yards buy your scrap according to the market price. Albeit, they always pay lesser than what they wish to sell to refiners. How much is a scrap oven worth? There are some ways to get more though as we will walk you through. How can I get the most money for scrap metal? There are two basic types of scrap metal: ferrous and non-ferrous.
Ferrous Metals. The scrap dryer could have ultimately been junked as is, and I could have saved myself those few minutes. While this price break down is pretty common for a lot of gas dryers, many clothes dryers will have better materials, bigger electric motors, stainless steel drums, or even scrap silver… which reminds me. Yup, even an el cheapo gas dryer like this one has scrap silver. Silver is used in many different types of electronics, very commonly as silver contacts.
In a dryer, silver contacts are most commonly found in the thermostats, relays, sensors, timers, control switches, etc. For example, the radiant sensor in the Roper brand gas dryer that I tore down can be found next to the burner and ignitor. As you can see in the picture, the silver contacts are not very big, and upon closer inspection, they were actually a copper billet with a small disc of silver hard soldered to it. These whole billets can be individually pulled off with combination pliers or side cutters.
Next thing I pull out are the timers, switches, and thermostat. The controllers can be found in the back of the control panel and smashed out with a 5 pound hammer, or pried out. The thermostat can usually be found at the back of the vent near the air output vent. All of these contacts can be pried off by bending the metal with pliers and peeling the contacts away. I did this process for all of the attachments in the back of the control panel, the radiant sensor, the thermostat, and everything else that had silver contacts when I smashed it open.
As you can see, half of these pieces are mostly copper, but the remaining pieces are silver. I would put the actual yield of silver at about 1 gram.
It took me about 20 additional minutes to harvest all of these silver contacts, so you can decide if that is worth your time or not. As mentioned above, nicer machines will have better materials. Oh, but I almost forgot about the loose change I shook out of the bottom of the dryer at the beginning…. While that may not seem like much, the real thrill from scrapping a dryer comes from seeing what you are able to find. Thank you to Kevin below for reminding us that the control panel facia can often be made of aluminum, so keep an eye out!
You did not mention on most washers and dryers the front fascia of the control panel is aluminum. You got me! Great point, I will be sure to add a note at the end of both articles. For your sharp eye, I can offer you a free prize.
